The rising and rising cost of our energy bills has been as much of a concern to us as anything in the last few years. Duties to the planet aside, the amount we were paying in quarterly bills was simply becoming unaffordable. So when we discovered skirting board heating systems and their magic 40% off your bills figure, we thought “why not?”
Overall, the cost of installing and running heated skirting board systems makes using a radiator or an Under Floor Heating setup seem a little bit like something out of the Middle Ages. On the one hand, you’ve got this clean heat source, which doesn’t stir up any dust or badness from your floors and walls; and on the other you have either radiators, which are incredibly inefficient and pretty unhealthy; or Under Floor Heating, which costs way too much in comparison and still isn’t that much healthier than radiators.
Our heated skirting board system cost somewhere between the price of having a radiator system installed and the price of an Under Floor Heating system – but it is going to cost us almost half as much to run from now on. That means the system has paid for itself within a year or so of installation – and after that we’re constantly making a profit. The house is much greener than it used to be, too. Those minimal costs directly correlate to the minimal amount of energy that our skirting board heating is using – hardly any to heat the tiny amount of water it needs and after that it’s all simple top-up heat!
Yes, it costs more than having a traditional radiator system put in. In the long term, though, a heated skirting board system will be much cheaper – for you and for the planet.
